Vlora is the city where Albania's independence was declared in 1912. It lies on a wide bay where the Adriatic gives way to the Ionian Sea, facing the Karaburun peninsula and Sazan island. It is a university city and a regional centre as well as a beach destination, so both year-round residents and summer visitors shape demand. Flag Square, with the Independence Monument, and the 16th-century Muradie Mosque mark the centre.
