Banks and exchange offices buy and sell at slightly different rates from the official one, so the amount you actually get may differ a little.
The rates here are for information only. This is not an offer to buy or sell currency; for a real exchange, the rate is the one your bank or exchange office gives you.

How hyrja.al uses the exchange rate

Every listing shows the price in the currency the seller or landlord chose, usually euro or lek. When you choose another currency to view prices in, the converted amount is marked with ≈ and the original price stays next to it.

Conversions use this official rate. We check it several times a day and take the new one as soon as the Bank of Albania publishes the rate of the day.

If you are buying with a loan, the currency matters for the loan too: compare euro and lek home loans.

For taxes, the notary and the other buying fees, see property buying costs.

Frequently asked questions

Why is the bank's rate different from the official rate?

The official rate is a reference rate calculated by the Bank of Albania. Banks and exchange offices set their own rates for buying and selling currency: when you sell them euro you get slightly fewer lek, and when you buy euro you pay slightly more. The difference is their margin.

Are properties paid for in euro or in lek?

Most properties in Albania are offered with a price in euro, but prices in lek are common too. The buyer and the seller agree on the currency and the rate in the contract at the notary, and payment is usually made by bank transfer. If you pay from an account in another currency, your bank converts it at its own rate, not at the official one.

How often is the rate updated?

The Bank of Albania publishes the official rate every working day. hyrja.al checks it several times a day, so this page shows the latest published rate with its date.

Why does the rate not change at the weekend?

The Bank of Albania does not publish an official rate on Saturdays, Sundays and public holidays. On those days the rate of the last working day applies, so the date next to the rate can be a few days earlier.

Source

The official rate comes from the Bank of Albania's “Official exchange rate” page, in lek per unit of currency with two decimals, as published. If the bank's page cannot be read, we temporarily use the open.er-api.com rate and say so clearly at the top of the page.
